Welcome, thank you for considering the CAEN partnership! It is great that you are thinking about selecting nursing as a profession. Thank you for taking a look at the Collaboration for Academic Education in Nursing. We are interested in helping you find a nursing program that fits with your learning needs and expectations. Let's begin by stating that not every nursing school or program is identical. Some of these differences are obvious: the length of time required, the type of degree obtained, the size of the school, location and costs. Many individuals select a nursing program, whether in a college or a university, based on convenience of some sort, be it location, length of program, reputation, etc., rather than learner interest and underlying philosophy compatibility. While convenience definitely needs to be taken into account, there are other considerations you might want to explore when choosing a program. In looking at possible schools of nursing, we recommend that you explore the underlying philosophy or theoretical perspectives of the program. Selecting a school of nursing where the underlying perspectives are ones that you can fundamentally embrace or are interested in exploring will likely help you succeed. This is information that should be readily available to you as a prospective student. This information will give you a general understanding of what the program emphasizes as important, and offer a broader understanding of the kind of learning that will take place. In addition to the program information, perhaps an even greater consideration is how this philosophy and theoretical perspective might intersect with your own personal philosophy and goals. After reading through a school's theoretical perspectives it will be helpful for you to reflect on how it fits you and your goals in becoming a nurse. |
